Chicago Triathlon Switches to Duathlon Due to Unfavorable Swimming Conditions

Race Organizers Made Decision on Sunday Morning

The 40th annual Chicago Triathlon was held on Sunday, August 27, with over 8,000 athletes participating. However, the swimming portion of the race was canceled due to unfavorable swimming conditions. Race organizers made the decision on Sunday morning after consulting with the Chicago Park District and the United States Coast Guard.

Duathlon Format

All participants will now partake in a run-bike-bike portion of the triathlon starting at the swim start area. The run will be 1.5 miles, followed by a 24-mile bike ride, and then a 6-mile run.

Safety Concerns

The decision to cancel the swim portion of the race was made due to safety concerns. The water temperature was below 60 degrees Fahrenheit, and there were strong currents and waves. These conditions posed a risk to the safety of the athletes.

Disappointment for Swimmers

The cancellation of the swim portion of the race was a disappointment for many athletes who had been training for months. However, the race organizers made the right decision by prioritizing the safety of the participants.

Alternative Events

For those who were disappointed by the cancellation of the swim portion of the race, there were several alternative events that were held on Sunday. These events included a 5K run, a 10K run, and a half-marathon.
