What is HBLR?

Overview

The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) is a light rail system in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States.

It is operated by NJ Transit and consists of two branches: the Bergen Branch and the Hoboken Branch.

The system has 24 stations and a total length of 20.5 miles (33.0 km).

History

The HBLR was originally built by the Hudson and Manhattan Railroad (H&M) in the early 20th century.

The H&M was a private company that operated a series of tunnels and elevated railways in Hudson County.

In 1962, the H&M was acquired by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ).

Expansion

The HBLR has been expanded several times since its original construction.

In 1984, the Bergen Branch was extended from Jersey City to Bayonne.

In 2000, the Hoboken Branch was extended from Hoboken to Weehawken.

Future

There are plans to further expand the HBLR in the future.

One proposed expansion would extend the Bergen Branch to Edgewater.

Another proposed expansion would extend the Hoboken Branch to Secaucus.
