Astros' Four-Run Eighth Powers Past Royals
Late Errors Prove Costly for Kansas City
Houston, TX - The Houston Astros rallied for a 4-0 victory over the Kansas City Royals in thrilling fashion on Tuesday night, capitalizing on a pair of costly errors in the eighth inning.
The game had been scoreless heading into the eighth, with both teams' starters, Framber Valdez and Zack Greinke, delivering dominant performances. But the floodgates opened in the top of the eighth when Royals reliever Scott Barlow misplayed a grounder, allowing MartÃn Maldonado to reach base.
A single by Kyle Tucker put runners on the corners, setting the stage for Alex Bregman's two-run double. A subsequent error by shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. allowed two more runs to score, giving the Astros a commanding 4-0 lead.
Royals Unable to Recover
The Royals, who had just two hits in the game, were unable to respond in the bottom of the eighth, going down in order against Astros reliever Bryan Abreu.
Hector Neris pitched a perfect ninth inning to secure the victory for the Astros, who improved to 19-16 on the season. The Royals, meanwhile, fell to 13-19.
